I am a Utah native and was raised in a devout LDS family. Jesus claimed me when I was 19 and placed me with the Baptists for several years. After a divorce ended 24 years of marriage, and I raised three teenagers as a single father. Dave and Becky live in Salt Lake City. My daughter Jessica and her husband have four children. They live too far away in Monument, CO. My experience of my own brokenness — failures in marriage — gives me great patience and hope with others like me. God can still use us! I rejoice and feel very blessed to be married to Dawn McNulty Wakefield. Dawn is a pediatric physical therapist and she has a great heart for ministry—especially with children. We are enjoying serving God together in all that we do.
God has used me in a number of ministry contexts. I served a Quaker community congregation in Deer Trail, Colorado, and Baptist congregations in Minnesota and Utah. I helped start Salt Lake Theological Seminary in 1984 and served as professor of Biblical and Spiritual Theology until it closed in 2009.
As lead pastor, I gladly share a full range of pastoral duties with Pastors Jeff Tally and Susan Westland. I find my greatest joy serving at Good Shepherd when I see people experience God our Father’s great love. We love, because God first loved us!
My family and I are thrilled to be here at Good Shepherd and we look forward to seeing how God will use us in this amazing church. Next to leading the lost to Jesus, I am driven to encourage, empower, and equip the people of God into living out the plans God has for us individually and as a body. I love teaching, preaching, mentoring, and missions. My whole family has a special interest in visual and performing arts, and I also enjoy teaching martial arts. I hope that, together, we will fall more deeply in love with Jesus, be surrendered to and filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit, and experience the adventure of God’s kingdom coming and His will being done in us.
I love languages and speak German, Japanese, and English. I love to explore the linguistic nuances of scripture in its most ancient forms. I also enjoy making short cartoons. My wife, Tess, and two daughters, Heather and Claire are the loves of my life!
My husband Rich and I have been married for 15 years and we have four children and three grandchildren. Our Son Adrian is deceased. His children are Michael (17) and Brenda (13). Our son Josiah (34) lives in Pendleton, Oregon with our grandson Michael. Our daughter Katie (34), her husband Craig and our granddaughter Emilia (3) live in St. Louis. Our Son Jake (30) lives in Denver. Rich and I are very excited to be serving God’s people at Good Shepherd and we look forward to all the great adventures God has in store for all of us.
Family Ministry Associate
I have been attending Good Shepherd for about 10 years and serving as a Family Ministry Associate since June and have really enjoyed it! My husband, Nathan, and I have two children and many pets. My previous work experience comes from
working as a Licensed Veterinary Technician and an Academic Intervention Specialist for at-risk youth. I love to learn and spend time with my family and enjoy being active outdoors. I am an avid clogger and dance on a competitive team. A lot of my time at Good Shepherd is devoted to Youth Community and the Barnabas Project. It is a pleasure to see the youth build their relationships with Jesus Christ and to serve alongside them. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Family Ministry Director
My husband, Dennis and I have been members of Good Shepherd for over 21 years. We are blessed with six remarkable, talented children “yours, mine, and ours” – five are grown up; James (13) is still at home. Fourteen grandchildren call us “Nana and Grandpa.” When I’m not working, you might find me on the golf course, picking tomatoes from my garden, or just hanging out with my family. I am responsible for the Good Shepherd Family Ministry Program which ministers to children birth through high school. I work with Jeff Stephenson and Alisha Davis as a team to plan and implement the year of ministry activities. Our goal is to create a viable and exciting ministry that, in partnership with parents will make disciples of our children and youth. My greatest joy comes when we as the body of Christ, work together in unity and bring glory to God in His ministry here.
Music & Worship Minister
My wonderful husband, Jim Nelson, and I have been married for 28 years. I am the Director of Music and Worship at Good Shepherd. I am responsible for the music, drama, dance, audio visual, and anything else that needs overseeing for the Sunday morning services, all special seasonal services, weddings and funerals. Ken Baum is the leader of the 9:30 worship team and I am the leader of the 11:15 worship team. I direct the Adult Choir, the Children’s Choir, and the Orchestra. I work with the youth to help train worship leaders. I design and organize much of the worship at Good Shepherd. My greatest joy is worshiping our Lord Jesus and helping others to worship Him as well. I’m grateful to God and the leadership of Good Shepherd for allowing me to be a minister of worship here.
Family Minister / Tech Director
I have served in youth ministry at Good Shepherd for the past 19 years. I was raised in the Salt Lake area and am married to Brittany and we have four amazing children ranging from 5th grade to high school. I am extremely excited about the move to Family Ministry at Good Shepherd and I count it a privilege to work with Jolyn and Alisha. My primary responsibilities at Good Shepherd are to provide Christian education and development for junior and senior high students in the context of Family Ministry, which includes teaching classes, leading Bible studies, planning retreats and missions, and developing student leaders. I am also responsible for all the social media, graphic design, video production, and website content for Good Shepherd. My greatest joy in ministry is seeing a student come into a relationship with Jesus Christ and to see that relationship with Christ effect change in every area of their life!
