Day 19 - Deuteronomy 30 and the History of God’s People in the Promised Land

Step 1 - Let’s pause for a few moments and consider where we are in God’s Story. Read
Deuteronomy 30 and notice that it contains a remarkable outline of Israel’s future. They will fail to love God with their whole hearts — an echo of the Shema (“Hear, O Israel” in Deuteronomy 6:4-5) — and they will be dispersed. When their hearts return to the Lord, God will gather them home again. They are commanded to choose life (verses 19-20).

Step 2 - How does this call to “choose life” follow the design pattern laid down in the early
chapters of Genesis?

Torah Genesis 1

Step 3 - We can infer from Deuteronomy 30:6 that we have a heart problem: “The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.” This softens the statement in Deuteronomy 30:11 that “what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach.” I John 4:19 reminds us that “we love, because God first loved us.” Review this video on God’s generosity, and ask, “What is our best strategy for loving God with our whole hearts?”

Generosity

Step 4 - Pray the Lord’s Prayer and ask: "What does it mean for God to give us our daily bread?"

Step 5 - Take one small step in obedience and be generous with someone else.

Day 20 - Israel’s History in the Promised Land (Part 1)

Step 1 - Read Joshua 24 and compare it to Deuteronomy 30. Why does this new generation need
to reaffirm their covenant with God?

Step 2 - Watch this quick summary of Joshua and ask, “How does this summary describe the
conquest of Canaan? Any surprises?

Joshua

Step 3 - Watch this quick summary of Judges and debate this idea: “How can a human king keep
everyone from doing did which was right in their own eyes?” (Judges 21:25).

Step 4 - Pray the Lord’s Prayer and ask: What does it mean for God’s will to be done on earth as it
is in heaven?

Step 5 - Take one small step in obedience as you continue to walk with God.
