“I AM the Light of the World!"

Sunday, January 8

"When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever  follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

This week we are going to focus on John 8:12 when Jesus declared, “I AM the Light of the  World. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.”

When Jesus said this statement, Jesus was at the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. The Feast  of Tabernacles was near so this was an opportunity for Jesus to display Himself publicly to a  large number of people. (The Feast of Tabernacles is a week-long fall festival  commemorating the 40-year journey of the Israelites in the wilderness.)

There is a close connection to light and life. In this world life is dependent on light. John  transfers this to the spiritual world. This light is personal not external as the light from a  lamp. This light is a spiritual enlightenment which man has received from God.

Jesus declared He was the Light of the World, but what do we say about Jesus? What do we  believe about Jesus?

Prayer for the Day: Dear Father, thank You for creating light that takes away the darkness we face. Holy  Spirit, fill us with the Light of the World so we can be transformed by God’s light we pray in  Jesus name – Amen

Personal Prayer: “Lord Jesus, You ask – “Who do you say that I am?” Lord, open my mind so I can understand who You are, and who I am in You.”
