Life Sustaining Bread
Thursday, January 5
"Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs I performed but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.” (John 6:26)
Throughout chapter 6 of John’s Gospel, Jesus is interacting with the crowds of people who have been following Him. As we discovered in our devotion yesterday, the crowd had followed Jesus for more food, but Jesus corrected them and told the crowd they needed to seek Him. Jesus told them to, “seek the eternal bread” The one that won’t perish, the one that is eternal. And then vs 35 again Jesus said, “…I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to Me shall never hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall never thirst.” Jesus now identified Himself as the bread about which He had been speaking. The eternal bread that you seek is me. Jesus did not say He had the bread of life, but that He was that bread. So, what does Jesus promise? Let’s break this down. Jesus is saying: I don’t care who you are, I don’t care what your social status is, I don’t care where you live, I don’t care what sins you carry, I don’t care what church you go to, I don’t care who your parents are, whoever comes to Me shall NEVER hunger, and whoever believes in Me shall NEVER thirst. I will complete you! I am everything you need to live! I am everything you need to survive! For you will NEVER hunger and you will NEVER thirst. IF YOU COME TO ME! Jesus tells the crowd, “I am the life sustaining bread that you seek.” What life sustain bread have we sought after this week? Has it been the bread of the world, or the Bread of Life? What do we need to do to hunger after Jesus and not the world?
Prayer for the Day: What life sustain bread have we sought after this week? Has it been the bread of the world, or the Bread of Life? What do we need to do to hunger after Jesus and not the world? – Amen.
Personal Prayer: “Lord Jesus, You ask – “Who do you say that I am?” Lord, open my mind so I can understand who You are, and who I am in You.”
